She was born in 1839 and had a sister named Sofia. Sofia married Carl Anderson and had three sons, Edward, and twins, Alfred, and August. When Edward was about 5 years and the twins were three years old, their mother, Sofia, died of an infectious disease in 1850. Sofia's sister, Albertina, was 14 years old at that time and was asked to take care of the three young boys first in Carl Anderson's cabin on the shore in Frolunda and then on the island of Kanso. Albertina was a strong and resolute girl, and the small boys felt secure with her in spite of her youth. She did a wonderful job as a substitute mother. Many years later the boys were older and Carl remarried.

Albertina left Vargö and sailed for the United States and lived in California.

One cousin thought Albertina became a nurse in San Francisco during the

Civil War years (1861-1865). Another cousin thought that she was a nurse-midwife.

She met a Mr. Fletcher whom she married and with him homesteaded a farm in Skamokawa, Washington. In about 1903 Joseph Bergman came to live with Albertina and Mr. Fletcher to help them on the farm. Shortly after Joseph arrived in Skamokawa, Mr. Fletcher died suddenly. For the next couple of years, Joseph worked for Aunt Albertina and then made arrangements to purchase the farm from her. During the next 12 years Joseph was able to mold this approximately one hundred twenty acres into a rather prosperous dairy farm.

John Carlson writes that he arrived in Boston together with his brother Charles from Sweden, and went to New York. They met their sister Susan, and the three of them left New York for Seattle, Washington, via Portland and Skamokawa to visit their cousin Joseph and Aunt Albertina. They arrived in Seattle December 23, 1906.

During this period of time in Skamokawa, Joseph returned to Sweden only once for a visit. It was also during this time (1912) that his sister, Stina, age 16 arrived in the U.S. and spent some time with him and Aunt Albertina on the farm.

Albertina moved to Berkeley, California, (about 1920) into a house next to the old Mission Covenant Church on the corner of Grove and Parker Streets. Enoch remembers that Albertina lived with his folks when he was about 3 years old. (Perhaps Albertina lived in Turlock before moving to Berkeley).

Marion remembers that when Albertina was older and visiting her parents on Shattuck Ave. she fell and broke her hip. She was drying dishes for Marian's mother and was going to sit on a bench that the children used as a table, and it tipped over, with her going down with it. She was taken to the Fairmont County Hospital, 15400 Foothill Blvd., San Leandro, Calif., and was there for several years until she died.

The parents of all of the cousins would take turns to drive our families in their early model cars on the long trip to the Fairmont Hospital to visit Aunt Albertina. Frances and Enid remember visiting her there in 1928. Enoch remembers that she was a very independent, vivacious, affectionate, hardworking person. Enid remembers that Albertina felt bad because they cut her long hair to make it easier to care for. She died in 1927 at the ripe old age of 94.
